The 50th Session of UN Human Rights Council Parallel Event was held at Peace Garden Museum

On July 6, during the 50th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council,  Beijing International Peace Culture Foundation, Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges and China Association for NGO Cooperation,jointly hosted a side meeting on "Actively Coping with Climate Change and Contributing to Humanity's Sustainable Development" at Beijing Peace Garden Museum .  This is a concrete measure for Beijing social organizations to actively participate in topic discussions and promote multilateral common governance in important areas under the framework of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Experts and scholars from relevant institutions at home and abroad and representatives of international organizations conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions at this side meeting to contribute folk wisdom in participating in international affairs and global ecological environment governance.

Li Ruohong, President of Beijing International Peace Culture Foundation, Dai Jianjun, vice president and Secretary General of Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges, and H.E. Ms. Isabel Domingos , Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe to China, delivered speeches at the meeting.


Chairman Li Ruohong believes that human rights and climate change are a permanent topic, and there is no peaceful environment without the harmony between man and nature, and puts forward seven needs: : 1. Global climate governance needs reform and innovation; 2. We need to change the trust crisis and cooperation atmosphere; 3. We need to explore a diversified, multi domain, multi-functional and multi form governance scheme; 4. we need the comprehensive coordination of talents, technology, capital, equipment, information and international supply chain; 5.we need the training and scientific popularization of basic education for teenagers; 6. we need the support of academic, cultural and media circles to spread and promote in museums, libraries, film and television documentaries and information networks; 7. Governments need to give policy and financial support, and mobilize social actors to jointly participate in climate change, especially natural disaster awareness and emergency relief, which is a public good for peace.


Vice President Dai Jianjun said that coping with the severe challenge of climate change is a global issue, and no country can stay away from it. We should respect nature and cherish the ecological environment that is imperceptible to use, difficult for us to survive  if lost; Recognizing the close relationship among the right to environment, the right to survival and the right to development and uniting to jointly deal with environmental problems is in line with the fundamental interests of mankind and the only way to achieve sustainable development.


Ambassador H.E. Ms. Isabel Domingos pointed out that we need a lot of communication and joint efforts, and we need to take fundamental, urgent and effective measures to achieve a green and eco-friendly world. She called for everyone to be committed to becoming an active promoter of human sustainable development.


Entrusted by H.E.Ms. Nada Al-Nashif, the Deputy High Commissioner for human rights of the United Nations, Benjamin Schachter, the environment and climate coordinator of OHCHR, sent a video speech for the meeting, calling on all parties to strengthen cooperation and make active efforts to protect basic human rights and create a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. In recent years, through cooperation with the United Nations system, developed countries and developing countries, China, as a participant, contributor and leader in global climate governance, has demonstrated the responsibility of a big country. Under the guidance of the concept of "man and nature are a community of life", China firmly supports and advocates international and non-governmental organizations to take climate change and ecological environment governance as a sustainable topic.

Representatives from the green Belt&Road project of the WWF Beijing Representative Office, the African sustainable investment project of the Kenya office, the China Green Carbon Sink Foundation, the Institute of agricultural environment and sustainable development of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the carbon neutral science, technology and Strategy Research center of Beijing Jiaotong University explained the key policies and important projects, Share the measures taken to deal with climate change in many fields and the work results achieved, and put forward more feasible and innovative schemes for diversified participation in global ecological environment governance.


In conclusion, Wang Xiangyi, vice president and Secretary General of Beijing Minhe Foundation for International Exchanges, pointed out that one of the environmental rights mentioned in the national human rights action plan (2021-2025) is to deal with climate change, including efforts to achieve the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, improving the ability to adapt to climate change, and strengthening international cooperation on climate change, It is believed that in the future, we will encounter many new cooperation opportunities on the road of promoting the harmonious coexistence between man and nature, and contribute to the reform and innovation of global climate governance.


The Parallel Event enriched the relevant contents of the 50th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council and built a platform for promoting exchanges and cooperation for more relevant institutions and representatives. All parties expressed their willingness to actively participate in and work together to address the global challenge of climate change and make unremitting efforts to promote sustainable human development.
